Largs lifeboat did not have far to travel as they helped a small vessel which had broken down, with an 82 year old man on board.

The OAP was in a dory - a small lightweight boat, about 5 to 7 metres, with high sides, a flat bottom and sharp bows, as the emergency call was made on Sunday at 12.17pm.

The small vessel had just been launched from the lifeboat slipway. The Coastguard alerted Largs lifeboat to the emergency call.

RNLI spokesman Alasdair Woods said: "It was reported that the small boat had been launched with one 82 year old man on board by his friend, who meantime had left the slipway to park the car and the launching trailer.

"On his return he discovered the dory had drifted off the slipway and the one gentleman on board could not get the engine to work.

"As the casualty was just off the slipway the volunteer lifeboat crew were soon on scene and recovered the vessel with the gentleman who thankfully was well and in good spirits."
