A giant basking shark has been washed up on Skelmorlie shores which could have been as a result of the stormy weather.
The 20ft fish's body was discovered by walkers on the beach between Largs and Skelmorlie at the weekend and could be the same creature that was spotted several weeks ago.
Local residents previously spotted a basking shark that had been knocked off course into shallow water by Storm Frank at the beginning of the month. (See story here) It is unusual to see basking sharks at this time of year which is why scientists are questioning whether or not this could be the same one.
Dr Phil Cowie, of the Field Studies Centre in Millport, said: "This is possibly the same shark that was spotted by locals a few weeks ago but there might be more than one on the Clyde.
"It is unusual to see sharks in the winter months let alone have them reported to us.
"It might have been ill and sick, the weather conditions could have been that bad or it could have died from natural causes. We will know more when it has been examined and a report made.
"Experts will need to look at the animal's characteristics and shape to detrmine what happened."
For those who would like to learn more about the wildlife on the Clyde they can join a local Club or society; such as one of the local branches of the RSPB, Scottish Wildlife Trust or Scottish Ornithological Society who welcomes new members.
The Field Station at Millport also run a variety of different wildlife courses through the year e-mail: enquiries.sco@field-studies-council.org to find
