Praise be!
Largs featured on BBC1 Scotland's 'Scotspraise' programme on Sunday 26 February 1978, live from St Columba's Parish Church.
The show was being introduced by Mr Altham Turner, principal of Inverclyde Sports Centre, who explains to viewers the aims and purposes of the Centre and described its close involvement with the community life of the town.
The 'News' reported: "The opening hymn is sung by the combined choirs and congregations of the town's churches, together with members of Largs and District Operatic Society and boys from St Columba's College and the music is played by the Ayrshire Schools Orchestra whose members are drawn from 16 schools in the area. The other Largs service will be televised next Saturday."
And during the same week of broadcast, over on the Isle of Cumbrae, Millport curlers enjoyed their first outdoor match on Cumbrae's hill pond since 1963. It was the first time in 16 years that the winter had produced ice thick enough to be played on.
On the footballing front, Largs Thistle 'skated' into the last eight of the Whyte and Mackay West of Scotland Cup after defeating Winton Rovers 3-1 at Barrfields Park. The frosty surface was not conducive to the best football but both teams produced good play, given the circumstances. The Largs goalscorers were Jimmy Elliott, Brian Reid, and Hunter. The manager was former Rangers and Morton keeper Erik Sorenson.
