A major development has been confirmed for Largs seafront as the long awaited Wetherspoon development has been given a confirmed opening date.

The super-pub chain is due to start development work on its new pub on the seafront on Monday this week, after originally lodging plans in August 2014.

The pub, to be named, The Paddle Steamer, will open on June 21, and the development costs £1.5 million.

A total of 50 jobs will be created including full-time and part-time positions.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “ We are delighted that development is set to start on our new pub for Largs. We have been keen to open a pub in the town for a number of years and pleased that this is now happening.

“We are confident that the pub will be a great asset to Largs and also hopefully act as a catalyst for other businesses to invest in the area."

The seafront site, formerly Atlantis and Lanes Amusements, also hosts Co-op, and Costa Coffee, which opened last month.

The Wetherspoons application underwent changes after its first application to North Ayrshire Council, and the application was regarded as a 'restaurant' when it was presented to the North Ayrshire Licensing Board.

Council planners pulled the plug on its original planning application due to the inclusion of an outside terrace on Gallowgate Street, the design of refuse storage and the repositioning of a nearby bus shelter.

Another application, submitted in December 2014, completely removed the problematic Gallowgate Street terrace and provided for a far less conspicuous refuse storage.

Largs pubs and restaurants united against the arrival of the superpub chain, with concerns raised over its near 400 capacity.

However, Wetherspoon countered that their arrival in Largs would have a ‘positive’ effect.
