The Cathedral of the Isles is offering the unique opportunity for members of the public to sponsor a key of their famous grand piano!
There is a serious reason behind the note-worthy project as the famous grand piano is in need of restoration to the tune of £20,000.
The restoration entails months of work by specialist Barry Caradine which will include: replacing all hammers, strings and wrestpins.
And that is not all!
Removal of the frame and the repair of four cracked bars using specialist cold stitching company; repair and restore all metal; treat soundboard in controlled conditions and repair splits; repair keys; replace soundboard decal; repair wrestplank; re-centre action throughout.... and the list continues!
Donations can be made on JustGiving (cathedralpianoappeal) until 29 April, or anytime by cheque to "Musical Resources Fund", Cathedral of The Isles, College Street, Millport KA28 OHE.
You can sponsor a key (a note of your choice - there are 92 to pick from!) and have it in your name, the name of an organisation, as a unique gift or in memory of someone.
The impressive concert grand piano in the cathedral has played no small role in the musical life of Scotland.
It was imported from Vienna to Bösendorfer's London Studio in 1938 and subsequently purchased by the BBC in Scotland, where it was used for broadcasts and concert with its orchestra.
Pianist Wight Henderson (1913 - 90), was the outstanding Scottish pianist of his day, and performed regularly on the piano. He was particularly enamoured, and bought the piano for his own use.
Wight Henderson was renowned for his concerto performances and recitals throughout the UK. He was head of the piano department at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama from 1955-1978.
Mrs Henderson, donated the piano to the Cathedral of The Isles in 2009 in memory of her husband.
Since its arrival in the Cathedral, it has been played by some of the finest pianists in the UK. It has been well cared for, but now in its 80s, requires work. The cost of a new piano is beyond the wildest dreams of the Cathedral's limited resources but Alastair Chisholm, Director of Music there is keen to preserve this particular piano because of its fascinating past, and the role it has played in our cultural heritage.
