It was away back in 1963 that the green light was given for a swimming pool in Largs, but it took eight years to come to fruition.

Council officers were certainly based on water based activities after Provost Herbert Acheson had opened Aubery Boating Pond during that particular year.

A 'News' report in May '63 earmarked the new pool for Anderson Park. Expert counsel interviewed by Largs Town Council officers suggested that grounds which included a swing park would be a good position for the new pool.

We stated: "A swimming pool can be built at Anderson Park. This is the view of Counsel who was consulted by Largs Town Council to ascertain if the terms of the late Mr Robin Anderson's bequest would permit part of the ground being used for the pool. The trustees agreed that they would not object to this if the view of the Counsel was favourable.

"It was the Counsel's view that the pool should not be separated from the rest of the park, it should be integrated in the general scheme of things and looked upon as forming part of the public park. It was also suggested that no more than a quarter of the area should be devoted to the park."

However, in 1971, the swimming pool was officially opened at Barrfields, and this design picture featured on the back page of a 1971 tourism guide 'Exhilarating Largs' which was distributed around the UK to attract visitors to Largs. The design shows the exterior of the pool before it was re-built within the Vikingar! complex in the mid-1990s.
