The Scottish Chamber Orchestra will make their debut in Largs’ Barrfields Theatre on Saturday 28 May.

This is a concert brimming with fantasies, myths, dance and comedy, featuring two SCO Principal Players as soloists: clarinet player Maximiliano Martín and bassoon player Peter Whelan. Both soloists know how to entertain and thrill as they perform Strauss’ entertaining Duet Concertino. Here, they tell the story of a dancing princess (the clarinet) and the strange cavorting of a bear (the bassoon) in Strauss’ Duet Concertino.

Both established international soloists in their own rights with various orchestras and groups, Martín and Whelan also form part of the critically acclaimed SCO Wind Sextet which recently toured Scotland to launch their new recording of Mozart Divertimenti. The recording  was Gramophone Magazine 'Editor's Choice' and was one of Gramophone’s Top 10 recent Mozart Recordings.

Spanish conductor Pablo González completes the concert with two works by the ever popular composer Mendelssohn: his concert overture to The Fair Melusine opens the programme. Mendelssohn considered his concert overture about the legendary figure of Melusine, a mermaid-like water sprite, to be the ‘most intimate’ thing he ever produced. His energetic First Symphony closes the concert with bristling drama and jaw-dropping creative energy.

Conductor Pablo González rose to recognition in 2000 when he won first prize at the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition. He has served as assistant conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and as a guest conductor for many of the great European orchestras. In October 2008 González was appointed principal conductor of the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra.

Scottish Chamber Orchestra players are renowned for their unique blend of passion, skill and energy, and are committed to bringing high quality music to communities across the length and breadth of Scotland, as well as around the world as proud ambassadors for Scottish cultural excellence. In recent years, the Orchestra has travelled throughout Europe, the Far East, India and the USA. This concert in Largs forms part of the Orchestra’s extensive summer touring programme which runs from May to September.
