Largs Golf Club has reached a significant milestone in reaching its 125th anniversary, and is still very much in full swing!
Legendary golfers have used the facility over the years including our own Sam Torrance, and father Bob, while even Greg Norman paid a flying visit some years ago. There is even a surprise Ryder Cup memento which was donated by Sam when he skippered the Europeans to victory in 2002!
The club celebrated the milestone anniversary last Wednesday.
A small number of local businessman came together in a local church in 1891 to launch the club, and a total of 30 members were duly enrolled, although still without a course to play.
Eventually land was leased at the north end of the town at Routenburn, and the renowned golf Professional Willie Campbell from Ranfurly was duly tasked with laying out the course.
Just a month later, a nine-hole course was inaugurated and the first medal contested in June 1891.
Annual subscription was 10 shillings and sixpence (52.5p). Two years later the club moved to its present site at Kelburn where it remained a nine-hole lay-out until 1953 when the present 18-hole course was finally established.
During the 60’s, the clubhouse underwent several major changes culminating in the current eye-catching structure.
Progress continued over the years and in 1981 the members bought the lease from Lord Glasgow (the club’s Honorary President) which meant that the course truly belonged to the members.
Many famous people have enjoyed the fairways, including such luminaries as our very own son of Largs – Sam Torrance, his dad Bob, Scottish professional golfer John Panton and Barclay Howard, a famous Scottish amateur golfer.
The buggy Sam buzzed about in when he captained Europe to Ryder Cup victory at The Belfry in 2002 was later donated to him – it has been parked up at Largs Golf Club ever since the historic victory!
To celebrate the 125th anniversary, the club has a range of come and try initiatives. For more details, go to www.largsgolfclub.co.uk
