Largs is set to bid farewell to Helter Skelter, the teenage cafe set up a decade and a half ago to give local kids their own dedicated space to go, socialise and have fun.
Don’t get too maudlin, though. The name is going, but only as part of a sweeping transformation which will ensure the venue has what it takes to attract the young people in Largs.
Work has already started, there is a chance to visit the Gallowgate Street venue as part of a ‘doors open week’ and take part in an online survey.
Skelter’s Stewart Robbie, better known to most as a talented musician, is one of the small group of volunteers spearheading the change.
Having carried out a lot of work in the background, Stewart was speaking to pupils at Largs Academy this week to gauge what they would like to see there.
He has also created an online survey, hoping to get as much feedback as possible before they take the next step.
Among the ideas are an improved cafe area, which may also double as a ‘hands on’ project for enterprising pupils, more use of music space and a
Renaming Helter Skelter was one of the things raised by people during early discussions and it was agreed that it would be renamed to mark what they hope will be a new era.
Stewart said: “Things have changed so much since Helter Skelter, from the technology available to their interests. We are competing with so many new things, so we need to know exactly what young people are wanting and what we can provide.”
A campaign has been launched to transform the ‘Helter Skelter’ space located at 82 Gallowgate Street. There is a doors open week being held until Thursday 19 between 6pm and 8.30pm inviting local people to come down, have a look at the space and share ideas for how the building could be best used
Stewart added: “The Helter Skelter building is such a brilliant space for the people of Largs and the surrounding towns.
"It’s a real shame the building has fallen into disrepair having been an important space in Largs in the 1990s when it was first started.
“Although this may be the end of the ‘Helter Skelter’ name, the building will continue to primarily be used for the benefit of young people it’s important that we open the space up to the wider community. Currently we’re conducting research supported by North Ayrshire Council & Largs Academy to identify what it is people want - this is your chance for your voice to be heard and tell us what Largs and the surrounding area needs.
“Ideally we’d like to speak to you in person and give you a chance to see around the space, but if you can’t make it then completing this two minute short survey would be a useful indication of how we can use the space.
“Head down to Helter Skelter building at 82 Gallowgate Street, Largs anytime between 6-8.30pm on Wednesday or Thursday evening for your voice to be heard."
