There was a fitting and poignant event in memory of the fallen from WW2 on the Isle of Cumbrae, which had particular significance for a local family.

Last Saturday, the Royal British Legion Scotland hosted a re-dedication of their memorial for all sailors, soldiers, and airmen from the merchant navy who have no known graves.

It is based on the south east side of the island, and islander John F Kennedy and brother Alistair, were given the privilege of laying the wreath on the 73rd anniversary of their father John being killed at Dezerta Harbour in Tunisia in 1943.

Legion members attended from Largs, Millport, and North Ayrshire in general, and Alexander J Boyd was the minister on the day.

Alistair, President of the Royal British Legion Ayrshire branch, said: "It was very well attended, and we had a lovely service at the re-dedication, and an excellent service from the minister. There was parade at the war memorial in Millport too, with a march past, and a salute, led by Colonel Donald Ross OBE, chairman of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders regiment association."

Also taking part on the day was Stewart Aitken, in his mid-90s, who took part in the Arctic Convoys, and has a holiday home on the island.

The music was played by the Isle of Cumbrae Pipe Band.
