The Cumbrae Gala Queen is going to be hosting a street party to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday after winning £10,000 of funding.

The Cumbrae Queen for this year is 10 year old Lauren Weipers. She will be attended by the rest of her female classmates in P6 as ladies in waiting, and the page boys at the crowning ceremony are all the boys from P3.

Organisers are celebrating this week after gaining a grant of £9,750 from Awards for All lottery funding which will allow the event to be a grand celebration.

Andrea McLachlan, who is organising this year's Gala, said: "Cumbrae will be celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Queen in style, and once more Cumbrae is pulling out all the stops to have a special celebration, and we hope lots of people will come on Sunday 12 June for the big day."

It is a weekend of celebrations as on Friday 10 June, there will be an ecumenical service of thanksgiving involving all the churches, and it will be the identical Order of Service with the same hymns and readings as the church service in London to celebrate HRH The Queen's birthday.

On Saturday afternoon, there will be afternoon tea in the marquee for invited guests including people who have been active in the community, and for islanders over the age of 80.

And on Sunday itself, starting at 2.30pm, it is the official crowning of the Cumbrae Queen, with a party in the grounds of the Garrison including free bouncy castle, magic entertainer, and refreshments.

And it makes it all the more special for chief organiser Andrea McLachlan as it is her own niece Lauren who is Gala Queen.

Millport has a great record for some special gala days after having a big street party for the Queen's Jubilee four years ago, and likewise, there was a fantastic day for the arrival of the Queen's Baton on the island to mark the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
