It has been announced that Millport man Alistair Chisholm is to receive the British Empire Medal for services to music and culture on the Isle of Cumbrae

Born and educated in the Glasgow area, Alistair graduated with B. Mus. from Glasgow University in 1968.

Having enjoyed family holidays in Millport from 1954, Alistair has always held a strong affection for the island, and is well known both on Millport, and the mainland, for his teaching.

Alistair taught class music in Cumbrae Secondary School, Rothesay Academy and Largs Academy until 1997, and subsequently taught adult classes part-time.

Alistair is an organist for the Cathedral of The Isles 1969-74 & 1987-present; and an organist St. Columba's Episcopal Church, Largs 1974-87, and a Lay Chaplain at the Cathedral from 2009-present. His musical research led to the publication of "Bernard van Dieren : an introduction " in 1984 and his interest in shipping and history is reflected in "Millport Pier Album" of 1992.

Of the BEM award, Alistair said: "I was delighted to give good publicity to my home island of Cumbrae and its fascinating Cathedral."
