"60 years married is a long time!" remarked well known Largs school of dance teacher Peggy Inglis, as she looks back at a blissfully happy six decades of romance.
Peggy, 85, is well known to generations of children for her popular dance school from 1969-1998, and moved to Largs in the late sixties with husband Tom who was an electrician to trade.
Peggy was very much a leading light in the local entertainment scene, having been involved in 25 pantos with Largs Players, and as many summer cabarets, while Tom was a very able back stage manager, putting his industrial skills to good use.
Although both are retired from the stage, the duo are strong supporters of the amateur dramatic and operatic scene in town, and regularly watch the shows.
They have lived in Laverock Drive all those years, after moving to Largs to be closer to the seaside, after Peggy closed her school of dance in Glasgow.
Both have known each other all their lives - their parents went to the same church - and Peggy and Tom were married in The Markers Church in Townhead, Glasgow in 1956.
Thomas was from Dennistoun, and Peggy was from Whitehill, and both went to school together, but didn't start 'walking out together', as it was traditionally called, until Peggy was 20.
Tom worked for the Scottish Health Service, and in the building division, retiring in 1994.
Peggy, who was an audit clerk in Glasgow, loved her dance school in Largs, and said: "I had an exceptionally good crowd of girls, roughly between 125-130 each season. Marianne Yeomans, who was my assistant teacher for five years then took over, and later she joined Andrew McGregor to set up Largs Youth Theatre."
Peggy was invited to join Largs Players in 1969 by Elsa Douglas, and both Tom and Peggy and honorary members of Largs Players and Largs Operatic.
"The secret to a long marriage is love and respect for each other, and loads of tolerance," said Peggy, "And lots of laughter! We had our own sorrows, with no children of our own but once you get over that sorrowful time, what benefitted me was taking all the talented young girls out dancing, so in the end, it didn't hurt me so much at all."
Peggy commented: "Everyone loves dancing! My great grandfather was a champion highland dancer, and that is maybe where I got it from, as neither my mother or her sisters danced, and I always showed a great interest in it, and have been dancing now since I was 4!"
Tom and Peggy enjoyed a diamond wedding celebration on Saturday at the Willowbank Hotel in Largs with close family and friends.
