A Largs man who was inspired to walk the West Highland Way by Ayrshire Hospice completed the challenge in only four and a half days.

Scott Hendry felt compelled to do a charity trek after sister Linda was recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

Due to serious pain while awaiting treatment, Linda was admitted to Ayrshire Hospice for professional pain management.

Scott said: "Linda was in the Hospice for a couple of weeks, and the help and goodwill we received as a family really inspired us all.

"The staff are first class and just being there is a first hand witness to the slogan which they work by, seeing them 'making today matter'.

"I spoke to staff and patients alike and was inspired by the whole experience. The care and dignity shown to even those at the end and those brave people showing such courage, I had to do something.

"We are not walkers and most kit was begged and borrowed, but we completed the West Highland Way in four and a half days, and camped along the way.

"Every blister and pulled muscle was worth it - and it is something we will never forget!"

Scott was joined by his nephews Drew Williams (Linda's son), and James Topping, and friend Craig Kneller.

"We started and finished together," said Scott, "And so far we have raised over £1200 for the hospice."

Speaking about the great work of the Hospice, Scott commented: "Nothing , it seems, is too much of a problem and they have made what is a terribly difficult time that little bit easier and brighter.

"Above all else, they have inspired Linda, and instilled and even stronger will to live within her, and I know that this fight that has been instilled in her will go a long way to helping her as she completes her treatment.

"Linda has laughed and cried and everything in between. She met friends at the hospice, and has sadly already lost some. But seeing the work the hospice do for people at the end, shows the true value of living for today.

Sitting talking to some of the patients, listening to them and making them laugh even in the face of such adversity has inspired us all, and has truly changed me forever.

"I am so proud of Linda and of each of the patients staff and volunteers I have met at the Ayrshire Hospice. There really are no words to explain how immensely inspired I feel.

This is for them, I take my hat off to you all. And from my family, thank you!"
