Largs Thistle say their thoughts and prayers are with Ross Lundy and fiancee Carla, after their new baby Dawson who was born with a rare medical condition.
Dawson has CDH - congenital diaphragmatic hernia - where there is a hole in the diaphragm affecting the stomach, liver and intestines, leaving little room for the lungs to grow.
It means his tummy, liver and intestines have been forced upwards through the space — which, in turn, has pushed his heart to the side. Doctors have said that the new born baby's chances of survival are rated at 50/50 as these early days are critical.
Mum Carla Buckley, 23, delivered the baby at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital on Saturday, as Dawson was immediately put into intensive care.
Ross said; "He’s hooked up to lots of machines at the moment which are helping him breathe, and he’s sedated to stop him moving about until he’s stable enough for surgery. One of the nurses told us that not all babies with CDH would have made it as far as he has. So far, touch wood, the signs are good.
“We’ve held his hand. They’ve not been able to weigh him but they reckon he could be about 6lbs.”
Speaking about the moments after Dawson was born, Ross, who is the Largs Thistle keeper, said: "He was placed on Carla’s stomach for a few seconds, then they took him to intensive care. We have been able to hold his hand. Carla has been commenting on how big his fingers are. I reckon he’s got goalkeeper’s hands.”
Stuart Davidson, assistant manager at Thistle, said everyone's thoughts were with the Ardrossan couple and their new baby: "I spoke to Ross on Sunday night, and we are all praying for them. They are in the best hands at Yorkhill hospital."
