A community councillor has hit out at litter louts at the Largs Viewpoint after leaving the area in a 'horrendous mess'.

Largs Council chair Douglas Blair noted that there has been a range of rubbish problems including flytipping at the site - and found the behaviour inexplicable.

He told his committee: "It was clear one day, and then the next day I went up, there was gunge everywhere. Even folk up for a barbecue just cleared off as if there was some kind of waiter service to come along afterwards to pick the bits and pieces."

Douglas said he was so disgusted with some of the dangerous materials left, where people could get cut, that he lifted some of the rubbish up himself.

He continued: "Some of the people who use the area should have visited the toilets before hand - it was horrendous. In other countries, it wouldn't be tolerated, I simply don't understand these people. It is a real shame."

And the chairman added that he noticed a lot of drink bottles had also been left - and said: "You would think if it was people who are semi fit and running, that they wouldn't just carelessly throw away litter, but it would appear that is what has happened."

Douglas said that he had sympathy for the NAC Streetscene team who work hard, but they have not been helped by some of the litter louts during the recent spell of good weather.

He said: "In fairness, they Streetscene team go up there regularly to clean up the place, but some of the litter that has been left has been ridiculous."

* Largs Community Council's environmental committee have organised another beach clean on Sunday 21 August.

Patricia Perman, who co-ordinated the last event at the end of the school term involving local primaries, had been a success.

She said: "The next beach clean will be on Sunday 21 August to clean up the beach area before the Viking Festival, from 12 noon-3pm.

"I am hoping everybody on the community council takes part - I have also made the First Responders and Community Resilience team aware and have asked them to get involved."
