Largs Railway Station is taking on a new train of thought by going organic!
Voluntary local group Largs Organic Gardens see the station as a platform of opportunity for its environmentally friendly project.
After a number of attempts to find available spaces in Largs which have been rejected, the group now hope they are on the right track by utilising the spare space at the station for raised flower beds.
Discussions have opened with Network Rail and Adopt a Station group, and have almost secured the use of the derelict railway siding at Largs station for a Community Garden
They will be constructing a few show beds and will be gathering interest from Largs residents in having a raised bed
The group are also looking to secure funding to finance the project
Over the last year the allotments group have tried to identify spaces for both dug allotments and community gardens, but have had mixed success.
The group are still keen to identify land for a bigger allotments site, but the spaces that found so far are most suited to community gardens with raised beds.
They have been planting up borders in Douglas Park, and are in the process of developing a further larger site with raised beds at Largs train station.
Formerly the Allotments Association, the new group have received funding from the Co-operative fund and North Ayrshire Council, and are grateful to both for their support.
North Ayrshire Council have given permission to manage some borders at the top end of Douglas Park. During the summer, the group planted sunflowers in some of the round beds
They will be planting up some of the other borders in the back end of summer 2016
The Organic Gardens committee are working with other groups in Douglas Park as a 'Friends of Douglas Park', and recently held a consultation on usage of the park.
