A young drummer who started off in the Largs Boys Brigade pipe band is now a world champion.

Callum Edwards, who lives in Gogo Street, was a drummer in the pipe band which won the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow.

Callum began drumming at the age of seven with the 1st Largs Boys Brigade pipe band, where he would remain for the next 10 years, finishing his career with the Boys Brigade band as leading drummer and tutor.

He then joined Inverclyde Juvenile pipe band for a season before making the jump into the adult grades to play with Johnstone Pipe Band in grade 2. Johnstone Pipe band's grade 2 band have had much success in their grade under pipe major Keith James Bowes and leading drummer Les Galbraith.

In their first season after being promoted into the grade, they won the European, Scottish and World Championships in 2015, and now the World Championships again in 2016. The World championships was held last month in Glasgow, with bands flying in from all over the world from Australia, Canada, North America, New Zealand and even Zimbabwe. On the day of the contest, the band played in a morning qualifier of 12 bands, and made the top 6 of the qualifier, putting them into the final. The final was made of 12 bands, the top 6 from both qualifying rounds, with Johnstone coming first, with 2 out of 4 judges having them placed first.

Callum said: "I was over the moon about winning! It was a long day with the qualifier being in the morning, and the final being late afternoon. The competition was very tough, but we managed to come through. It made all the intense practicing over the winter, and then the week before worthwhile. It's been a highlight of my drumming career so far, and I would like to say thanks to all of the Boys Brigade officers and bandsmen for giving me such a great platform to begin my pipe band career on"

The band are hoping to get promoted to the top grade, grade 1, for next season. This will be yet another challenge as there is a massive difference in standard between Grade 2 and Grade 1. "

Callum added: It will be a hard winter's work with lots of new music to learn and plenty of other challenges!"
