A Largs couple celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary - 70 years together - and cited happiness as the reason behind their long marriage.

Ronald and Enid Smith only moved up to Largs ten years ago to be closer to their son Paul, who lives in Rankin Drive. The couple stay in Allanpark Street.

Ronald is 96, and Enid is 90, and they followed Paul to Scotland after he got a job as a marine engineer.

Workwise, Ronald was a welder in Swansea docks throughout his career, and they were married a year after peace broke out after the Second World War - 1946. Enid was a housewife throughout her life, but did work in British Home Stores at one point. Ronald was on the home guard, and had to stay posted in Swansea where his work at the docks as as welder was important in the war effort. He also worked on the anti-aircraft guns - when the German air force was coming over - as part of the allied defence. Swansea took a battering during the war, and many buildings were smashed up, far more than Greenock was, pointed out Paul who vaguely remembers.

Paul moved to Scotland in 1968 where he got a job as a marine engineer, and went on to become a mechanical surveyor - he retired two years ago. Paul's wife Linda is manager of the Job Centre in Kilbirnie.

Paul, said: "Father is very bright and quick witted, and mother is sharp as a pin! My father is 96, I am 66, and my son is 36! I have been in Largs for 48 years.

"I don't think they have any secret behind their long marriage other than being happy!"

Ronald enjoyed his fishing over the years, and also shooting, and since moving from Wales, they have loved living in Largs.

They have two grandchildren Michael Smith and Joanne Donald, and great-grandchildren.

To celebrate, the family had a meal at The Brisbane House Hotel on Sunday.
