The second screening for Largs Film Society’s new season is ‘The Salt of the Earth’ (2014) on Friday. This film honours and celebrates the work of Sebastião Salgado, a Brazilian photographer who for the past 40 years, has been crossing the continents documenting the ever changing face of humanity’s history; often through challenging times of conflict, war, starvation and diaspora.

After recording and experiencing these testing times, Salgado has now embarked on a new emphasis, paying tribute to the planet’s beauty through its landscapes, flora and fauna. His photographs and this film afford us the safety of glimpsing humanity in the most testing of situations. The refuge of the aesthetics of his work does not preclude the moral questions it leaves us with. Salgado's life and work are revealed to us by his son, Juliano, who went with him during his last travels, and by Wim Wenders, himself a photographer.

The Society screens films every third Friday from September to May in the Valhalladrome at Vikingar; doors open at 7pm with a short introduction to the film before the screening at 7.30pm. Entry is to members and their guests. For membership enquiries please contact membershipsecretary@largsfilmsociety.co.uk. For more information and programme details see www.largsfilmsociety.co.uk
