The growth of 20mph limit around town centres in Scotland will not extend to Largs after the community council campaigned against the move.

Largs was selected with five other towns around the country to adopt a 20mph pilot on the A78 between Aitken Street and Nelson Street, but the move proved unpopular, and Largs Community Council objected to the move.

Julie Watson of Transport Scotland wrote to Largs Community Council, and stated: "We have recently took the opportunity to update information on traffic flows, accidents and other factors which led to the original recommendations for a speed limit reduction the A78 through Largs of a distance of 868m.

"In light of extensive discussions that have taken place with objectors, we are no longer recommending a reduction in the speed limit as was previously proposed.

"Consequently we can confirm that the Order is not being progressed and that the speed limit will remain as it currently is."

Largs councillor Alan Hill was a critic of the 20mph limit, stating that the accident statistics on the stretch were not necessarily related to speed, and would be an additional enforcement issue for police, while community councillors felt it was acceptable in the early morning to drive through Largs at 30mph, with community councillors pointing out that speed naturally slowed down due to the busy traffic and traffic lights in position.
