A Largs joiner is taking up some new tools as he is set to take part in an Arctic trek to raise funds for the Beatson in Glasgow,

Braving freezing conditions, Duncan is doing an incredible 100km trek in the Arctic from the 2 March 2017 until 8 March 2017.

And if you think it has been cold here during the past week, spare a thought for the 55 year old father who will be trekking into the Arctic Circle, covering 100K in sub-zero temperatures.

But Duncan has no fears over the challenge, having already done a sky-dive, and the West Highland Way, it is 'snow' bother to him!

With support from the Beatson team, he prepared for this once in a lifetime challenge by attending information nights, a training weekend and fundraising

Duncan is planning a variety of events to help raise funds for this charity which supports so many people who is affected by this awful illness.

The adventurer will be first heading to Rovaniemi, the city which is regarded as the home of Santa Claus and Lapland in Finland, after a flight from Helsinki.

There will be a day of acclimatisation with temperatures expected to reach -30 degrees Celsius before the trek begins, which will include camping overnight by the open fire, with a chance to see the Northern Lights lighting up the night sky.

At the end of the epic adventure, Duncan will get the opportunity to rest his weary legs with a trip on a snowmobile, or possible husky sledding, and visiting a reindeer farm!

Duncan is a self-employed joiner and owns D&N Joinery, and has already walked the West Highland Way this year.

Duncan's wife is Marie, and he has three children David, Ailsa and Jack, and lives on the 'Red Road' between Largs and the Meigle in Skelmorlie.

A number of fundraising events are planned including a darts competition and a dance night.
