A badminton hot-shot from Largs is aiming to compete in the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020.

David Purdie has been selected to represent Scotland at the Parabadminton Europeans event in recent years, and is now aiming towards competing on the world's biggest stage.

David recently competed for Scotland last month in the Irish four nations event and earned a gold medal in the doubles with Colin Leslie (Dalkeith), playing against Owen Casey and Cameron McLaughlin on Dublin (21-16, 21-14) in the final.

David told the 'News': "Badminton is going to be a Paralympics sport in 2020 and that is now my main target, and I am aiming to take part in the World Championships in November next year."

David has a right sided weakness to his arm right leg which is a form of cerebral palsy, and his passion for badminton was nurtured by Largs Boys Brigade where he first started playing the game. He said: " I really enjoyed it and started getting addicted to it. I am hoping to compete from February to August and that is very much funding dependent. I have had some excellent support from Stewart Associates of Largs."

The 24 year old also plays for Largs Badminton Club, and said that the club has been fantastic, and his main aim now is to get selected for the Paralympics to pursue a medal dream.

David is a former Kelburn Primary and Largs Academy pupil, and is a familiar face around the town, having worked at Inverclyde Sports Centre and Routenburn Golf Club in recent years.
