Millport needs to be 'better connected' and concentrate on the benefits of marine tourism to keep the Isle of Cumbrae at the forefront.
That is the fervent hope of chairman of Cumbrae Community Development Company chairman Stephen Dobbin who addressed a local audience during the charity's AGM.
Stephen said: "There is currently a plan being investigated to explore the feasibility of a new storm water defence scheme. The future capital programme to alleviate flooding in Millport through this scheme presents us with some unique opportunities. If we fail to use this chance to enhance the economic outlook with new facilities for marine tourism then we will have failed a future generation of islanders. For this reason, CCDC is pushing for a more inclusive agenda with relevant authorities including North Ayrshire Council to include tourism and economic aspects into the flood defence system. The Scottish Government recognises the value of marine tourism and the newly formed Ayrshire Growth Forum is looking at ways to increase the economic viability of our coastal corridor.
"CCDC serves on the committee and is committed to promoting Cumbrae as a viable alternative for a host of tourist activities.
"Moving forward it is clear to me that we need better connected thinking and planning to revitalise many parts of our community. Working hand in hand with many partners, I hope we can grow the economy of our island and ensure that for coming generations our beautiful island continues to serve as a vibrant home and visitor attraction for local and tourists alike."
Stephen added that the charity were grateful to North Ayrshire Council for providing a grant to assist with the development of a 'long term development  masterplan' for The Garrison and its grounds.
