This year Fairtrade Fortnight continues until Sunday March 12.

All Largs Primary Schools use this time to celebrate Fairtrade and have lots of events and discussions within their schools about Fairtrade, the Fairtrade logo and the power the pupils and their parents have to change lives of poor farmers in developing countries by buying Fairtrade products.

The Largs Fairtrade Initiative is asking everyone in Largs to put Fairtrade products into their breaks during Fairtrade Fortnight. Having the perfect cuppa or a snack is an important part of our daily routine, yet millions of farmers who produce the treats we enjoy during our breaks are struggling to make a living.

Largs, a Fairtrade Town joins North Ayrshire, a Fairtrade Zone, and the rest of Scotland, a Fairtrade Nation, to help ensure a fair deal for disadvantaged farming communities by holding Fairtrade breaks. Largs' businesses, clubs, churches and faith groups and all other groups are encouraged to put Fairtrade products into their breaks during this fortnight and throughout the year.

Joe Broussard, Chairperson of Largs Fairtrade Initiative said, “The food on our tables, the tea and coffee in our mugs, all come from farmers who work hard but are not paid what they deserve. When we reach for the cheapest products, we may be unconsciously feeding exploitation. We become part of the problem, but we can make a conscious choice to be part of the solution and support trade that is fair.

“Choose Fairtrade when you next shop, or ask your local store to stock Fairtrade products. Join our Fairtrade break or organise your own – because farmers deserve sustainable incomes.”

If you are interested in having someone come and talk to your group, business, club or organisation about how you can support Fairtrade please contact: Joe Broussard, joe@broussard.co.uk, 07774234801 or Ken Jarrett, kenjjarrett@gmail.com 01475 672623. The newly established steering group are also very interested in anyone who might consider joining our group to further develop Fairtrade in Largs.
