It is hoped that the new one way system through West Kilbride will ease traffic congestion, after Stagecoach stated that they have experienced some issues in the town centre recently.
Last week, North Ayrshire Council proposed a traffic management order including a proposal for one way traffic operation in Main Street and Ritchie Street (westward) and Well Street (north eastward).
The public have the opportunity to see full details of the traffic order proposal at West Kilbride Library, and at North Ayrshire Council offices, Cunninghame House, Irvine.
Discussions with the Stagecoach Bus Company have resulted in significant improvements to the routes that bus services will take through the village. In addition, given the proposed change to bus routing, it is considered appropriate to remove an earlier proposal to make Hunterston Road one-way over part of its length and retain its operation as a two-way road.
A spokeswoman for Stagecoach West Scotland said: “We have been consulted by the North Ayrshire Council Roads and Transportation department regarding the proposed one way system within West Kilbride and understand that they are currently progressing the proposal. Although we have experienced some issues with our 585 services within West Kilbride due to parked cars on Main Street and Ritchie Street, this proposal was not initiated by Stagecoach.”
Traffic proposals were unveiled to local residents last year during a public consultation exercise and received significant support with 81 per cent of people indicating that they were in favour of introducing a one-way system.
A total of 14 per cent were not in favour, and 5 per cent said that they did not know.
A separate public meeting by one of the local elected members and a ballot indicated a strong level of support for the one-way proposals too.
Any person wishing to object to the proposals should send details in writing to Commercial Services (Roads and Transportation), Cunninghame House, Irvine, KA12 8EE by 31 March.
