Largs Community Council carried out an exercise to raise awareness of the dog dirt problem by placing flags on problem areas, and ran out of flags!

Dog fouling is a major concern for many people in the town, and it is one of the most complained about issues that the community council receive.

To this end Largs Community Council's Environment sub group, arranged for a "poo" flagging exercise starting at Broomfields the bottom of May Street, working towards John Street on Sunday.

The community council ran out of flags, despite having 100 of them before arriving at John Street!

Community Councillor Patricia Perman commented: "Welcome to Largs, this is a disgrace to our town. It is appreciated that not all dog owners are inconsiderate, but this sample shows many are. Would you like your child or grandchild or someone else's to come home covered in dog dirt? Not only is it messy to clean but can cause serious infection".

This area of Broomfields is used by children to play, to picnic and is also used for a children's fun day in July and the fireworks display during the Viking Festival.

The group will now flag other areas of the town and liaise with North Ayrshire Council Streetscene as to the way forward.

It is understood the the Enforcement Officers were issuing fixed penalty fines to those persons unwilling to comply with the basic rules.

Community Councillor Val Lundie also stated "It was heartening to have such a positive response from dog walkers asking why the flags were displayed and who all agreed that the problem was bad dog owners. They supported the community council's efforts."
