A local councillor has told the ‘News’ it is unacceptable that two of the main shelters in Millport have been closed off to the public since earlier this year.
With the summer season in full flow, councillor Tom Marshall said he thought it was very disappointing that the local authority could not resolve the issue.
Both the Newton and West Bay shelters are fenced off.
Having alerted NAC to the problem, Tom said: “This is the busiest time of the tourist season. To say this is disappointing is to put it mildly.”
The shelter in Glasgow Street has been fenced off since early spring, and the issue of disrepair was raised with North Ayrshire Council in June.
A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “Structural issues with the Millport bus shelters were identified during our regular inspection regime. Although the structures are not at risk of imminent collapse, we believe they are not suitable for use at the present time.
“Following our inspection, structural engineers were commissioned, and further surveys undertaken which have allowed us to develop repair proposals. Materials, including steel work which require to be fabricated specifically for the repair, have been ordered and repair work is scheduled to commence in the next few weeks.
“The Council is aware of the unfortunate timing of these issues, coinciding with the main tourist season, however, public safety is our primary concern and we are working to resolve the situation as soon as possible.”
