John W Hunter Cup

The Society suffered a sad loss in March of this year with the death of John Hunter. John had been a member since 1970 and had served on the committee for many years and in many capacities, including treasurer and latterly auditor. But he will be mainly remembered as a prolific prize-winner. John won his first major cup in 1982 for six roses and over the years he won trophies for pot plants, begonias, cut flowers, 12 roses, 6 roses, sweet peas, fuchsias, dahlias, chrysants, and vegetables and most points in the show many times over.

At least 3 or 4 every year. In 2013 he won eight trophies. It was a standing joke that John needed a wheelbarrow to take home all the cups that he had won. Unlike many prize winners John did not specialise and seemed to have a magic touch for whatever he turned his hand to - begonias, dahlias , roses , pot plants or vegetables - he excelled at them all.

John was always prepared to give advice on any gardening topic and particularly to anyone exhibiting at the show for the first time. John has been a stalwart of the society for 47 years - the committee are proud and delighted that this year a memorial trophy, generously provided by his brother Tom, will be presented in his name to the overall winner of the show.
