The Douglas Park shelter and toilets in Largs, which has been the target of anti-social behaviour and vandalism, is set to be demolished by the end of September.
The ‘News’ understands that the work for the shelter to be demolished is set to go out to tender shortly.
North Ayrshire Council have also carried out an asbestos survey at the site, but found the shelter to be clear.
A delegation of residents from the surrounding area appeared at the recent Largs Community Council meeting, and handed in a petition calling on the shelte to be removed.
However, the matter has been given a lot of attention on social media, with some calling on the shelter to be saved.
The area was used by a local theatre company two years ago during the Viking Festival Fiona Armour, who was involved in the unique project, said: “We did the most amazing day and night time show at the back of there in the Burns Garden. It wouldn’t take much for the right person to transform this little hidden gem of an area for good.”
Fiona Wilkin said: “I remember the beautiful greenhouses in Anderson Park with the plants, the goldfish and the aviary. That was vandalised and then the council knocked it down. The toilets there were vandalised too and the council knocked them down. Is there a pattern here? I just don’t understand this wanton destruction. So sad.”
Sharon Palin suggested: “Why not involve the young people in doing it up? Might give them a reason to keep it looking nice?”
However, the petition from local residents stated: “We have had to tolerate this nuisance for many years and despite numerous calls to the police, no effective action has been taken. The problems seem to have been escalating recently, and we now have a reasonable cause for concern about the potential spread of fire to properties via adjacents trees.
“We are also concerned about council funds being expended on cosmetic measures such as timber repairs and repainting; these do not have any beneficial effect and would only perpetuate the problem. The unanimous opinion among affected residents is that he whole building should be demolished to remove it as a venue for anti-social behaviour.
“The purpose of this petition is to demand the complete and permanent removal of the building at the earliest opportunity.”
Residents said there was often ‘youths shouting, girls screaming, loud music, vandalism and instances of deliberate fire-raising.’
