An epic sailing adventure around the UK involving 100 young people in recovery from cancer comes to a triumphant finish at Largs Yacht Haven this Saturday.
Remarkably, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Round Britain relay started in Largs on May 20 before taking in 2400 miles of the coastline, and a special welcome home gathering is taking place at Largs Sailing Club for the big return.
The crew have stopped in over 60 towns and ports where people have been encouraged to get involved with activities on shore, welcome the crew in and visit Moonspray, the 44ft yacht which has been home to the young people on the voyage. The reason Largs has been selected to start and finish the race is because it hosts the Scottish base of the charity.
It has been a celebration of recovery, achievement and potential. As part of this, the crew have been engaging with hospitals around the country with the aim of establishing a positive outlook for the futures of young people still undergoing treatment for cancer.
A flotilla of yachts and cruisers from Largs Yacht Haven accompanied Moonspray for its big send off and since then, the crew have visited Liverpool, London and Cardiff, and returns on its last leg from Belfast to Largs, scheduled to arrive on Saturday at 11am.
