S1 pupils recently attended an event to celebrate and raise the profile of literacy. Pupils battled it out in teams, creating a persuasive speech and poster highlighting why their nominated department are the “Champions of Literacy”. It was a tightly fought competition as the pupils presented to guest judges from around the school, but in the end there could only be two winners… Music and IT.
The English Department would like to thank everyone involved in helping to ensure this year's International Literacy Day event was a success. The day cannot run without your support and help from staff judges, S6 Buddies and our S4 leadership pupils.
The senior pupils were fantastic this year. They demonstrated excellent leadership and coaching skills as they encouraged the S1s throughout the day - which is not an easy task period six on a Friday. A special mention has to go to Hannah Jones (S4) who was an absolute stand out in terms of leadership and teamwork.
Pupil feedback was very positive. Ross Pauline said, “It's not just about writing, literacy is maths, geography, drama and many more. You have to implement literacy in all aspects of school." Alice Lawrie added “I've learned to use teamwork and communication skills in my daily lessons” whilst Molly Wilson shared her thoughts about literacy in PE: "Even athletes use literacy to talk to their coaches and get better."
