A local landmark is set to be lit up to mark North Ayrshire’s newest music and arts festival, which kicks off this week.

Organisers of Vertex Festival in West Kilbride will light up the Barony Centre during the ten-day festival.

One of the festival’s organisers is villager Chris Maughan. Chris said: “One of the main aims of Vertex is to put local music and artistic talent in the spotlight with concerts, exhibitions and events.

“The Barony is such a focal point for the creativity in the village and North Ayrshire that it seemed appropriate to shine a spotlight on it.

“This is the first year of Vertex – which is run by volunteers – and we have been overwhelmed by the support already.

“We hope that people come out and get involved – and that Vertex becomes a fixture in the festival calendar in North Ayrshire for years to come.”

The Barony Centre will become the latest building to be lit up in support of a good cause following international landmarks including Big Ben, the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower.

Festival volunteer Drew Kirkland is a sound and lighting consultant, as well as a DJ.

Drew said: “The Barony is fantastic venue – both inside and out. It’s a great building and recognisable to people from across North Ayrshire and beyond as the hub of Craft Town Scotland.

“Vertex is a great example to make the most of the assets we have here in West Kilbride and North Ayrshire.”

Drew has also been working with North Ayrshire artist Keith Salmon. Keith – who is partially sighted – paints Scottish landscapes.

Keith and Drew have been working on an exhibition that combines large landscape paintings with immersive sound in a single installation which will be on exhibition at the Barony during the festival.

Vertex kicks off this weekend with Music in West Kilbride; a DJ master class, art project Makers of West Kilbride; tea dance, a concert with local young musicians from Soundtown Project supporting some of Scotland’s best new bands and local legends the Fencebay Band.

On Monday there are literary events with local poet Gerry McGrath and local children’s author Al Dapre.

Vertex takes place between 20 and 29 October at venues in West Kilbride including the Barony Centre, the Community Centre and the Village Hall.

Tickets for events are available at the festival box office in the Barony Centre from Monday to Friday between 11am and 1pm.
