Arrangements have been made to present the Save Millport Pier petition to Joe Cullinane, Leader of North Ayrshire Council and also to Elma Murray, Chief Executive, on Friday 3 November.
The campaign group have also been invited to give an up to 10 minute presentation to NAC’s Cabinet on 14 November. The Cabinet is the main decision making body of the Council and will be deliberating over a report on Millport Pier.
So far, the campaign has spanned two protest events, songs, t-shirts, car stickers, and even a motion in the Scottish Parliament.
The petition was launched after concerns raised in the Largs and Millport Weekly News by islander Alistair Chisholm, who said: “Our council’s forward planning includes the demolition of our wooden pier. Already maintenance has been stopped for the last three years with the inevitable weakening of the structure. Without paying attention to the views of Millportonians and regular visitors the wooden pier could be removed.
“Apparently the money has been earmarked already. Millport’s wooden old pier is an essential asset for our town.
“Not only does it allow access for suitable boats and ships at all tides, but it is the only breakwater protecting the sea wall in Stuart St.
“Until and if the Flood Prevention Scheme is complete, it behoves North Ayrshire Council to repair and maintain our wooden pier - at the very least.”
Mari Wallace, who has led the campaign, said: “The Save Millport Pier campaign would like NAC as a matter of urgency, to reinstate the pier to a safe and working condition. We would also like them to ensure that offshore breakwaters, with either the retention of the current pier or incorporating a new modern pier facility are selected as the preferred flood protection option as is being promoted by the Millport Pier and Harbour Users’ Group.”
