Specsavers in Largs is encouraging people to donate their old, unwanted glasses to a cause which is helping to improve the eye health of people in the developing world.

The Aitken Street store has collected more than 2,000 old pairs of glasses for Vision Aid Overseas since the start of this year – and staff hope that with continued kind donations from customers, the total will pass the 2,500 mark before the end of the year.

Store director Chris Leatham says: ‘It’s so important that we do what we can to improve eyecare in the developing world.

‘Living in the UK, we have easy access to eyecare but many people across the globe find it very difficult to access even the most basic facilities.

‘There must be hundreds of specs lying around at home that are no longer used by their owners. It would be great to see these frames going to charity.’

Unwanted glasses are recycled and the money raised is used to fund the charity’s work in developing countries, which includes eye tests, treatment and training local optometrists.

Specsavers has worked closely with Vision Aid Overseas for the last decade. During this time, the opticians has collected in excess of 250,000 pairs of glasses.
