Can Boyd Street cope with another hot food eaterie is the question being posed by members of the public in relation to a new restaurant in Largs.
An application has been made to NAC to convert a former newspaper and groceries shop in Largs into a small restaurant with a takeaway facility.
On entering the premises the restaurant would occupy most of the ground floor.
The main servery would serve both the restaurant and the takeaway. Within this area would be an open layout kitchen and servery for both the restaurant and the takeaway. Offset to the right upon entering the restaurant would be a small takeaway waiting area.
Bennetts development and consulting, the agents acting for applicants Save Estates, stated: “The proposed development represents an opportunity to recycle this empty single storey building and to create a small quality restaurant.
“This proposal will contribute to the range of catering establishments available within the area and extend the choice of eating experiences open to residents and visitors alike.”
There are no objections from Environmental Health in relation to the development.
This single storey property of traditional design with a tiled roof sits in the middle of a group of three units and occupies a central location on Boyd Street, between Nelson Street and Gateside Street.
Bennetts consulting added: “The street is essentially commercial with a variety of businesses adjacent, including a kitchen design studio, a Farmfoods store, a number of eating establishments and a former citizens advice bureau.
“The premises which previously traded as a newsagent/cafe, has been empty for some time.”
“Externally the only significant change will be the installation of a ventilation flue which will pass through the roof and access to atmosphere on the rear pitch of the roof and will be invisible from the street. The design of the flue will be to industry standard and will incorporate ant-vibration fixings to minimise any damage to the fabric of the building and reduce any possible noise.”
However, one objector Mrs Margaret Chan stated: “We object to this change of use at 31 Boyd Street, Largs,. This area consistently has a problem with the volume of traffic and parking. The sewage pipes also have problems with being blocked and flooding. The night time noise would be increased which will upset local residents. This area has enough hot food outlets supplying the area.”
The mezzanine area would be located above the entranceway and will be accessed via a flight of stairs from the main restaurant area.
To the rear of the ground floor would be male and female cloakroom facilities as well as an accessible toilet for disabled people.
