The ‘News’ can exclusively reveal that there are ambitious plans for the future of the Garrison grounds in Millport involving a modern purpose built building to include a new function suite to replace the town hall, a swimming pool and fitness gym suite.
Cumbrae Community Development Company CEO Michael Bertram spoke to the ‘News’ about the exciting new plans which would also include a new marquee area for big festivals and events on the island.
The proposals come about as the former Millport Town Hall, which was built in 1877, remains closed due to its derelict state.
It is planned that the new community hall would replace both the DA Hall and Age Concern buildings which have existed for many years in the Garrison grounds, but are now considered old fashioned and not sufficient to meet modern demands.
Mr Bertram added that talks had already taken place with Sports Scotland regarding the new indoor pool facility, with the possibility of linking up with Cumbrae’s National Watersports Centre.
Funding for the new project is currently being sought with a number of options available including Community Shares Scotland who have already helped raise vast amounts for other communities in Scotland.
Mr Bertram said:”We want to bring a swimming pool to the island,a multi-purpose gym, and a function hall which can convert into a live music and entertainment venue. This plan has been a year in the making, and the masterplan is just being finalised with North Ayrshire Council who are providing a study. We have looked at various options with what we can do with the grounds.
“A business plan and funding model is currently being developed with the Scottish Council of Voluntary Organisations who have assisted us with another entity called Just Enterprise, and we hope to have that signed off by March 2018. “
CCDC have been working with North Ayrshire Council who have helped assist with the business plan study.
The overall project has been estimated to cost £6m, and the new Community Shares Scotland project allows the public to buy shares to invest in the future of the island.
In collaboration with Community Shares Scotland a community share offer would provide all who love the island the opportunity to purchase community shares, and it is also an option being considered for the future of saving Millport Pier.

There used to be a paddling pool in the grounds of the Garrison, see picture below.
