Building a new market place area in Gallowgate Square is set to commence this coming week as part of the Largs Masterplan proposals, although controversy continues to surround the other major council re-development - the resurfaced Largs Prom.
A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council, said: “The improvements to Gallowgate Square will help create a flexible event space, which could host small concerts, farmers’ markets etc, and will help make a huge difference to the heart of Largs.
“To achieve this, the water feature will be carefully removed and given its local heritage value, we will retain the fountain in a safe place.
“The works at Gallowgate Square are scheduled to begin in the New Year.”
However, Independent councillor Ian Murdoch has voiced strong concerns regarding the resurfacing of the Largs promenade which has taken place during the past month.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:
Ian said: “The thing is that during the public realm consultation and the feedback and the majority of feeling behind that was to reject the ultra modern street furniture and steel goalposts, and Sydney Opera House shelter design in favour of a good quality prom with longevity.
"People were expecting a whole lot more than what we have ended up, myself included.
“I did not expect 20mm red chips. We wanted 8-10mm - the normal pavement size chips.
"But it was explained to us that the size of chip could not be spread by the machine used.”
Conservative councillor Tom Marshall has also slammed the surface.
Cllr. Tom Marshall said: “Frankly if as a business we had executed a contract to the standard that has been delivered to Largs Promenade, then the customer would reject the work and either demand a refund or rectification
“I was instrumental in getting the small red chipped asphalt paths laid along the Bowen Craigs.
"I asked for similar on the main prom and expected the normal paving chip size.
“The chips are not well spread and some clumps of them are coming loose.”
