Independent councillor Ian Murdoch is hoping that the new Gallowgate Square event space will be a boon for the town.
Construction work is currently underway at the location after the former square and fountain area was demolished earlier this month.
Speaking at the Largs Community Council meeting, Cllr. Murdoch said he believed that it be a top quality event space.
He said: “I want to see it as an entertainment event space for the whole town and any group or individual can book the space, providing the comply with all the rules and regulations.
“It isn’t going to be a place where you can just turn up and perform - it will have to be pre-booked in advance.
“It is proposed to have a powerpoint in the square so it will have a source of power so bands can have electricity. It will be a top quality surface, and will be an asset to the town.”
Cllr. Murdoch voiced concerns though about whether it should be used as a market space at the community council meeting.
Furthermore, he told the ‘News’: “It it was to be used as a marketspace, it should be for local businesses, I wouldn’t want to see businesses outwith the town competing with local businesses.”
In the original Largs masterplan proposals set in 2014, Gallowgate Square was proposed to be a ‘re-designed square to include new natural stone paving, underground bin storage, contemporary seating, and open spaces for events.”
Improvements to Gallowgate Square were costed last summer at approximately £250,000. NAC say they are currently considering options to improve bin storage at Gallowgate Square and will engage with elected members.
In recent years, bands have performed in Gallowgate Square during the annual Largs Live weekend event, and have drawn big crowds.
Labour Cllr. Alex Gallagher said “The event space in Gallowgate Square opens up a range of opportunities and could bring in some fantastic entertainment to the town.
