Largs Independent councillor had given his support to moving the library to the Vikingar! although there are no concrete plans.

Rumours have been swirling in recent weeks that the library could transfer to the KA Leisure run facility.

North Ayrshire Council have said that there are no plans on the table at present for the move, despite an independent report suggesting the move around five years ago.

Speaking at last Thursday's Largs Community Council meeting. Ian said: "It is something I would support as the Vikingar! needs to be much better utilised. The Vikingar! is owned by North Ayrshire Council, and leased by KA Leisure.

"There are issues with other councils in other areas shutting down libraries, and I am not saying that is going to happen here and there are no proposals to do so but I'd much rather see the library moved into the Vikingar! to see it at its full potential. It means there is more potential too for the cafe to open and other services."

The move has also found favour with some members of the public. On the Largs and Millport News facebook page, Alan Hugh Ronald Dorman said: "An idea... Move the library in to vikingar as rumoured and have rooms in there that can be used by the community and create a community and sports hub?"

New sporting facilities for the public will be available at the new Largs Campus when it opens outwith school hours.

However, Councillor Tom Marshall has spoken out against any moves to transfer the library away from Allanpark Street, and believes it would not suit older residents to move it to the Vikingar!

Residents had contacted the 'News' after rumours had spread in recent weeks that Largs Library was said to be moving to the Vikingar! in place of the sauna and steam room facilities. However, Steven Quigg, the former Largs Thistle footballer, said that it would be very sad to lose the sauna and steam room facility.

North Ayrshire Council are currently 'rationalising' buildings, and have not ruled out the library move to the Vikingar! in future.
