With the new Largs Campus set to open soon, residents have been contacting the 'News' asking what the situation is regarding traffic access to the new super school.

There has been a significant amount of analysis and planning regarding the transportation options for the new Campus, the council say.

A council spokesperson said: "In the first instance, the council would encourage sustainable travel methods and have invested in the road and path infrastructure within the area to make walking and cycling as attractive an option as possible.

“Buses have been provided with a separate controlled access and drop-off / collection area. Designated routes have been agreed which are designed to coordinate vehicle flow in and around the Campus.

“For those who do choose to travel by car, the campus has been designed to allow dropping off within the site. There are substantial drop-off areas within the campus which car users can access via the main entrance. This approach has been successfully used in other areas for example, at the new Garnock Community Campus and provides easy access to the schools while simultaneously reducing the impact on the surrounding road network.

“Dropping-off in the immediate vicinity of the campus is discouraged as this has the potential to cause undue congestion and will impact on the safety of pupils.

“While it is not possible to enforce the traffic routes suggested by the school community, it is anticipated the majority of users will use the most sensible route.

The council have also responded to questions from parents over the provision of crossing patrols in the area.

The walking routes are as follows: From the south: Irvine Road; Waterside Street; Moorburn Road; Holehouse Road / Glenacre Drive, and; Alexander Avenue; From the North West: Greenock Road; Barr Crescent; Douglas Street Brisbane Street; Glenacre Drive, and; Alexander Avenue; From the North East: Brisbane Road; Laverock Drive, and; Alexander Avenue.

Crossing patrols will be located at: the Gateside Street / Flatt Road / Moorburn Road junction; the Holehouse Road / Alexander Avenue junction; Alexander Avenue (adjacent to the entrance) and the crossing point within the campus.

A petition by local mums has been launched to gain a crossing patrol on Moorburn Road at the entrance to Surrey Glen, which has received backing from Independent councillor Ian Murdoch and local MSP Kenneth Gibson.
