North Ayrshire Council have responded to criticism that they left it too late to announce the closure of Largs Academy on Wednesday morning.

Parents took to social media to hit out at the 'late' decision after children had already travelled to reach the school before the move was made to close the secondary just after 9am.

A NAC spokesperson said: “In adverse weather, we make assessments about schools on an individual basis.

“We had hoped to be able to keep Largs Academy open on Wednesday but it became apparent that staff members coming from further afield were struggling to get to the school.
"A decision was taken to close the school as soon as it became clear that there would be insufficient staff available to enable the school to operate normally.

"We apologise for the inevitable inconvenience this has caused to parents and carers.”

The decision was taken at Wednesday lunchtime for all schools and early learning centres to be closed on Thursday.
