There were long queues on the A78 through Largs and Fairlie on Thursday due to emergency gas works on Irvine Road.

A spokesperson for Transerv, who maintain the trunk road on behalf of Transport Scotland, said: "It was an emergency fault which was being attended to by gas distribution company SGN. Scottish Power had been doing works earlier in the week, but once Scottish Power had finished, SGN had to come in."

A Fairlie businessman told the 'News' it took him over two hours to journey between the north of Largs and Fairlie during Thursday afternoon.

On Friday morning, there have been reports of a tailback from the Haylie Brae junction to Fairlie.

A SGN spokesman said: "We’re carrying emergency repairs to our gas main in the A78 in Largs. Our engineers worked through the night to complete the repair and the road surface is currently being restored. To ensure everyone’s safety, we installed temporary three-way traffic lights which are being manually controlled at peak times. We hope to remove the traffic lights later today."
