BUSINESS owners in Largs have said that the closure of the A78 Largs-Skelmorlie road during the Easter holidays 'can't be allowed to happen'.
We reported last week how it has been proposed to close the Largs North gateway for resurfacing between April 6 to 9, Skelmorlie South from April 13 to 16 and the A78 at Inverkip the following weekend.
A number of local businesses have said the plan 'lacks common sense' and will hit their takings during one of the busiest times of the year.
Bagel Basket owner Stewart Currie said: "Why would you close a main road during the Easter holidays?
"That is our busiest time of the year. It is massive - half of our trade comes from Greenock and the bus coming from Glasgow via the scenic route.
"Why are they not on a night shift to get the work done? The roads are a terrible mess, but the busiest weekend of the year, if we get good weather, you are talking about three times the normal trade after a hard winter.
"It is a crazy move. Politicians make so many mistakes because they surround themselves with highly intelligent people with no common season. They should come and listen to the public."

Lounge owner Stephen McDonald also shot down the plan.
He said: "It is a ridiculous proposal, It can't be allowed to happen.
"The local councillors need to stand up and stop this. Someone has to be held accountable for a really bad decision.
"Largs is a tourist town - its our lifeblood - and without an access from the north end of town you are effectively cutting your tourism business in half. Hopefully all the councillors will get behind us and stop this happening.
