A charismatic island toilet cleaner has been heralded as a tourism boost for Millport after signing up for second year to scrub the island's loos.
Suki McGregor - known as The ‘Cumbrae Cludgie Cleaner’ - has made the public lavatories spick-and span, adding flowers and bars of soap inside, with donations from local shops and businesses.
Suki regularly broadcasts each day on Facebook Live as she talks about the interesting people she meets and also reports on regular events taking place on the island from festivals to breaking news such as when First Minister Nicola Sturgeon visited the island last year by helicopter.
Suki signed up in time for the Isle of Cumbrae toilets opening again for the new tourism season on Monday.
Deborah Ferris, Chairperson of Cumbrae Community Development Company said: "We are delighted to report that funding has been received from North Ayrshire Council which will enable them to continue operations for the rest of the year and have re-appointed Suki McGregor as the contractor.
The ‘Cumbrae Cludgie Cleaner’ has certainly boosted Millport’s tourism with her shining toilets, Facebook page and her quirky ‘Bog Vlogs’ and is delighted that funds have been secured to allow her to continue with this vital service."
Newton Beach in Millport was Ayrshire’s sole winner in the 2017 Scottish Beach Award scheme run managed by Keep Scotland Beautiful. The awards are judged on cleanliness and facilities, without toilet provisions we would lose this wonderful award for locals and visitors.
Deborah added: “We have received funding for this season as part of the final asset transfer of the toilets from North Ayrshire Council and on behalf of the wider community of Cumbrae, we are relieved that we can offer a full complement of toilets for both locals and visitors this coming season”.
The toilets are at Ferry Slip, Fintry Bay, West Bay football field, Pierhead, Garrison House ‘bomb shelter’ and Croc Rock. Disabled amenities are also available at Ferry Slip and Pierhead and there are also public toilets available within Garrison House which include baby changing and disabled facilities.
Deborah added: "Cumbrae Community Development have collection boxes in most of the businesses in town, so please give generously so we can continue to provide our public toilet service for many years ahead.
