A MAN who works in Largs has been hailed a hero after he cleaned a litter ridden street in Largs.

Despite only working in the area, Alistair Graham from Prestwick decided to spring into action after seeing a Facebook post which showed an alley between M&Co and the railway station laden with litter.

He posted his results on the Largs People Facebook page and became inundated with grateful comments, with the post receiving over 600 likes.

Modest Alistair, a worker at Largs Railway Station, said: “Although I know that the lane is not part of the station premises, I thought it would be something I could do which would help tidy the area up.

“It only took me just under and hour and I’m sure some of the community groups dedicate a lot more time than that to making Largs tidy and presentable.”

The original image had shown the alley littered with parking vouchers, fast food wrappings and plastic.

While it has been suggested that a lot of the rubbish may be blowing in to the alley, Alistair says it's likely people are adding to the problem by discarding their rubbish.

He added: “I really enjoy working in Largs and I have a good rapport with many people here.

"I enjoy being part of the town, so it was just a very small gesture to sweep and clear a relatively small area and do my bit.

“I was a bit overwhelmed by the response.

"There were some very kind and appreciative comments but there are plenty of people who do a whole lot more in the town than I do.

“I just noticed a post on the Largs People page which was highlighting the mess in the lane and I went to look for myself and thought I would do something about it.

“Hopefully now that people see the problem it will encourage them not to drop their litter.”
