The new skate park opened at Mackerston last Friday and was evidently 'wheely' good fun as youngsters couldn't wait to have a shot.

A £100,000 sum was secured from Largs seafront car park funds towards the Largs Skaters Group, after a delegation addressed councillors at Largs Academy last year.

Largs Community Council and councillor Alan Hill have been working with the skate group towards the exciting new development for the town’s youth.

The new park will be suitable for skateboarding, scooters, inline skating, BMX and trials riding.

Largs skaters spokeswoman Veronica Galbraith said: "The youngsters are skating, scooting, skateboarding and bmx-ing. We are very pleased with the final result."

Cllr. Hill said: "I am delighted to have been able to work with such a well organised group of young people in delivering a state of the art facility for Largs.

"Over a year ago the local skating community attended our North Coast Locality meeting and gave us a presentation on the need for a new park and the very many benefits that these young people derive from skateboarding including health and fitness, benefits to mental health as well as the social side of things. Their presentation were eloquent and well thought through.

"The new skatepark is among the best in Ayrshire and great thanks are due to the contractor and also to the council's staff and officers who have supported this project from the beginning.

"Council officers have also been very good at involving the young people in the project."

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council, said: “The new skate park is an excellent example of a community led initiative funded by the Largs Car Park Fund.

“It comprises a range of features, including quarter pipes (two concave ramps) and hubba ledges (a ledge down a set of stairs) to suit people at all levels.

“Designed and constructed by Bendcrete Skateparks, it has been created in such a way to allow many skaters to use it at once.

“The layout lends itself to good flowing lines no matter how busy the skate park is. There is lots of platform space to accommodate larger groups of riders where they will wait for their turn to ride.

“We are sure it will be an extremely popular facility and are really pleased the Largs Car Park Fund has been able to support this fantastic project.”
