WEST Kilbride Museum has been closed after a glass roof panel exploded on to a main street.

The incident is said to have sent glass ‘cascading’ on to Arthur Street and into the museum, resulting in the closure of the street on Saturday afternoon.

North Ayrshire Council officials said as we went to press that the museum will remain shut until further notice.

The cause is currently unknown, however secretary Gwynne Donohoe marked that the double-glazed glass panels were only installed two years ago.

Gwynne took to social media to alert the public to the problem and tell them that the museum would be closed.

The museum had been hosting a wedding dress exhibition at the time, featuring dresses from the mid-19th century to the present day.

The small attraction also has a permanent collection of old toys and dolls, as well as famous Ayrshire embroidery.

It is unknown whether any damage has been caused to any of the collections.

Opening in 1988, the museum aimed to give the town an attraction plotting its history over the past 400 years.
