It is an exciting new chapter for the new library resource at Largs Campus after receiving a £5200 financial boost from a new national fund.

Thanks to the School Library Improvement Fund, the grant aims to support innovative school library projects throughout Scotland and the Largs project was one of 15 to be successful in the first round of funding.

Officially entitled the Largs Campus Library Resource Centre, the new library at the campus aims to empower young people to shape the future of their own school library.

A total of 1600 young people will have access to the fantastic reading resource centre which will be a unique shared learning space for young people from Early Years to S6

With the aim of developing literacy, numeracy and enterprise skills, groups from P7 and S1 classes will submit budget proposals for books to be bought for their library.

After the funding investment, winning groups will go on to champion the books they have chosen, and overall winners will be groups whose books are most borrowed and read.

Campus library resource manager Theresa Newbury said: “The project will provide a focus for learning across both primary and secondary sectors, highlighting the central role of school libraries in developing life-long learning skills.

“The shared learning space will offer new ways to work and learn, and it’s important that for all users their first experience is a positive one. I hope the project will demonstrate what’s possible and generate ideas for other learning initiatives across the Campus, with the Library Resource Centre as the focal point.”

Councillor Louise McPhater, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “The new Largs Campus is an amazing facility and will ensure our young people – from early years right through to secondary - will get the best possible start in life.

“The Library Resource Centre is a key part of the new campus, helping to nurture, encourage and inform the pupils.

“I think it’s fitting that this year - the Year of Young People - the project’s emphasis will be on empowerment and ownership, as pupils themselves shape learning in their new Library Resource Centre.”

The School Library Improvement Fund is administered by the Scottish Library and Information Council on behalf of the Scottish Government.
