Police are to step up patrols at a Largs swing park and Sandy Beach after reports of broken bottles left by youths causing a danger to children and dogs.
The 'News' has received reports of rubbish being strewn across the kiddies play area as a regular occurrence at Anderson Park in Largs.
A local dog-walker, who wishes to remain anonymous, contacted the 'News' to say that she was disgusted by the amount of glass bottles regularly smashed at an area widely used by children, and she regularly picks up the glass herself and throws it in the bin.
The neighbouring resident said: "Since Douglas Park shelter was taken down, it would seem that the youths have moved to Anderson Park. It is a lovely park, but it is terrible to see the amount of broken bottles in the area.
"My grandchildren regularly use the park, and it is well used by dog walkers. It's very dangerous having it underfoot.
"I go out of my way to pick up the glass, but something really needs to be done about it.
"I don't know what the solution is - perhaps the park needs to be closed after dark."
Anderson park is a popular spot at this time of year, specially with the cherry trees in blossom, and includes a basketball court, and children's play facilities.
Another issue which has been raised on social media was the amount of litter left at Sandy Bay beach at Bowen Craig last month, after scores of youngsters used the occasion during a sunny evening.
A Facebook user posted on 27 May: "Congratulations to the large group of students who left Sandy Bay looking like a tip this evening .... bottles everywhere."
A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “We are not aware of any issues regarding heavy litter or smashed glass at Anderson Park.
“The beach at Bowen Craig tends to be busier during the summer months. As such, we programme twice daily bin collections to accommodate the excess rubbish produced as a result of an increase in visitors. Apart from one isolated incident on Tuesday, when a large volume of paper was discarded on the ground, we are not aware of any littering issues at this location.
“To report instances of environmental crimes such as littering, fly-tipping or dog fouling, please contact our Streetscene Environmental Team on 01294 310000.
“We would also remind residents that if they witness or are concerned about anti-social behaviour, please report this to Police Scotland in the first instance.”
Inspector Colin Convery of Largs Police said: "All noted - the team will carry out review of the area and we will put patrols in place where required."
